New Year: New Codes

December 2022

Looking ahead, January brings both a new year and a new set of CDT, CPT, and ICD codes. Incorporating these changes has a broad impact on your practice. From communicating these changes to staff to updating your software, having a plan in place is the key!

But, first, why are these changes so important? New code sets not only mean code additions but also code revisions as well as code deletions. Moreover, it’s a trifecta of updates across dental codes, medical codes, and diagnosis codes. Plus, these changes may impact dental/medical cross-coding for oral surgery. It’s a lot.

In 2023, there will be:

  • 22 new, 14 revised, and 2 deleted CDT dental codes (ada.org);

  • 225 new, 93 revised, and 75 deleted CPT medical codes (ama-assn.org);

  • 1,176 new, 28 revised, and 288 deleted ICD-10 diagnosis codes (journal.ahima.org).

Keeping up-to-date with all of these code changes not only helps ensure that a patient’s record reflects current treatment definitions but it is also essential in avoiding code related claim rejections that disrupt efficient claim processing and timely reimbursement. Let’s say that again—codes must be current to avoid unnecessary rejections/denials and maintain efficient claim processing and timely reimbursement.

It’s easy if you have a plan. To start, ask yourself these questions:

  1. How are code updates being communicated to staff? What resources do they need?
    Nearly all of your staff need to be aware of code updates. Frontline staff need to begin implementing new codes immediately in treatment planning while billing staff need to be aware of how code updates impact claim processing. There are many coding resources such as books, ebooks, companions, apps, webinars and more designed to help communicate the new code sets. Check out ADA, AMA, AAOMS, AHIMA, and other memberships and associations you have to find what works best for you.

  2. How is code data updated in practice management software?
    All software databases and vendor agreements handle updates differently. Many databases update automatically on a maintenance schedule while others require scheduling an update manually. Reach out to a software representative to find out how code updates are imported into your software. Many vendors even have dedicated webpages and resources specifically for code updates.
